Memory trouble
Your Mac gets slow, or programs inside Linux are killed for running out of memory.
Your Mac gets slow#
Instances' memory can't be paged out, so too much of it leaves macOS short.
- Hibernate instances you aren't using — suspended ones still hold their memory.
- Lower their memory on the Overview tab — especially above the three-fifths warning.
- Use dynamic memory, so idle instances give memory back.
Programs in Linux get killed#
When Linux runs out of memory it stops a program to survive — often the biggest one. Linux images don't use swap, so there's no slow fallback first.
- Raise the instance's memory (manual), or its maximum (dynamic), then restart it.
- On dynamic memory, the live readout's Guest stalling on memory shows when it's struggling.
