Linux menus in the Mac menu bar

Moving an app's File and Edit menus to the top of the screen, and which apps can do it.

Chapter 12 of 201 min read

A Linux app's menus — File, Edit, View — appear in the Mac's menu bar at the top of the screen, the way a Mac app's do, instead of being drawn inside the window. On by default.

This is what makes a Linux window feel like a window rather than a window with a menu bar inside it.

When there are more menus than fit#

A long menu bar runs into a MacBook's notch. MSL keeps what fits and tucks the rest behind one final menu, so nothing is lost on a smaller screen.

Not every app can do it#

If an app's menus are missing from the menu bar and from its window, that is worth turning the switch off for: some apps hide their in-window menu bar as soon as anything claims to be handling menus for them, and then publish nothing.

Applies to apps launched after the change, so close an app and reopen it to see the difference.
